An activist for human rights, universal equality and freedom. He proposed a system of free public education in order to educate citizens equally. Then as now, the principle makes a lot of sense in terms of fostering active citizenship, and the right to education should indeed be recognised as a right for all human beings regardless of their social or legal circumstances.
